The springs at Caronte have been used since ancient times; according to historians, the first mention of the spas was by the Romans in the second century A.D., and was referred to as the “Acquae Angae”. Others believe that the discovery of the springs dates back to the times of Homer, and is mentioned in the poem Cassandra by the Greek poet Licofrone, and depicted on some coins in the ancient city of Terina. We know for certain that the existence of the springs was acknowledged and appreciated by the Normans. Roberto il Guiscardo is noted to have brought his troops to the natural springs in 1056 to recover from battle. From 1500 onwards, people’s knowledge of the spa increased, and it is mentioned in many ancient and modern documents. In 1716, Gian Galeano Cataldi took over the running of the springs. His family continued to run the spa for the next three centuries, bringing with them a wealth of wisdom and memories, and turning the spa into a local asset. In recent years the company has become acclaimed for its excellence and professionalism, especially from the 1970s onwards, thanks to the introduction of technological advancements in health and beauty care.
